Laser-driven Ion Acceleration
Authors: Macchi A.
Abstract: This chapter aims to give a concise overview on the motivations, principles, state of the art, physics and perspectives of laser-driven ion acceleration. The goal is to provide an introduction to this field accessible to the non-specialist reader and to summarize major achievements and most recent developments. More complete and detailed presentations may be found in several review papers both by the present author and co-workers [Macchi et al., 2013a,b; Borghesi and Macchi, 2016] and by others [Daido et al., 2012; Fernández et al., 2014; Schreiber et al., 2016].

Laser-Driven Ion Accelerators: State of the Art and Applications
Authors: Borghesi M., Macchi A.
KeyWords: laser-plasma acceleration of ions; biomedical laser applications.
Abstract: Laser-plasma based accelerators of protons and heavier ions are a source of potential interest for several applications, including in the biomedical area. While the potential future use in cancer hadrontherapy acts as a strong aspirational motivation for this research field, radiobiology employing laser-driven ion bursts is already an active field of research. Here we give a summary of the state of the art in laser-driven ion acceleration, of the main challenges currently faced by the research in this field and of some of the current and future strategies for overcoming them.

Laser-Plasma Particle Sources for Biology and Medicine
Authors: Giulietti A., Bussolino GC., Fulgentini L., Koester P., Labate L., Gizzi L.A.
Springer Series in Chemical Physics
ISBN 978-3-319-23656-8
More Information: Chapter in the Volume: Progress in Ultrafast Intense Laser Science XII (Springer).
KeyWords: Ultrashort, intense laser pulses; Sources for Biology; Radiobiology. Abstract: Ultrashort, intense laser pulses can drive in plasmas small sized linear accelerators (Laser-Linac’s) of high energy elementary particles. These novel devices are facing a continuous, fast progress making them suitable alternatives to conventional linacs in many applications. Among them, cancer therapy may have by far the highest social impact at a global level. This paper is aimed at giving an updated overviewof the scientific and technological effort devotedworldwide to the optimization of the laser acceleration technology in order to fulfill the clinical requirements. Here we discuss both ion and electron acceleration considering the different, challenging problems to be solved in each case. Current studies on radiobiology already in progress in many labs with the existing laser-based sources of particles are also described. The overall scenario in the field appears extremely exciting, and promises rapid, effective development.

Nanowear of Polymers
Authors: D’Acunto M., Dinelli F., Pingue P.
In: Fundamentals of Friction Wear on the Nanoscale, pages 545-587
Part of the NanoScience and Technology book series (NANO)
ISBN 978-3-319-10559-8
Abstract: The use of viscoelastic materials, such as polymers, constantly increases in the field of nanotechnology. These materials are softer than metallic and inorganic ones, and, because of that, they are easier to deform and wear off. The wear mechanisms occurring for viscoelastic materials are rather complex, and, generally, present more complications for a direct investigation with respect to metalsor ceramics materials. With the advent of Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM), well characterized forces can be applied to a surface with a nanometer-scale spatial resolution. In particular Atomic ForceMicroscopy (AFM), working at high contact forces, can significantly modify many surfaces. Polymers are soft enough to be modified by hard AFM tips, such as those of silicon, silicon nitride or diamond. For these reasons, the AFM is today the main tool employed to investigate wear occurrence on polymer surfaces. The wear of a polymer surface caused by an AFM tip in a regime of single asperity contact is an articulate process that depends on conditions such as, namely, the applied forces, the tip shape, size and the relative velocity. Since the influence of all these parameters is in close connection with the sample properties, one can expect a dependence of the wearing process on the mechanical properties of the sample surfaces. These properties can vary significantly from the bulk properties, if cross linking is made or, on contrary, residual solvents are present in the specimens. This chapter is divided in three sections following a general. Introduction. Specifically, the first section deals with wear induced by means of AFM tips to study the mechanical properties of films at the nanoscale; the second one regards the exploitation of wear for the creation of nanolithographic patterns; the last one is finally dedicated to an applicative field such as the characterization ofwear of polymers for biomedical applications at the meso- and nanoscales.

Authors: Arimondo E., Gozzini S., Maccarrone F. (Edited by)
ISBN: 978-88-7438-085-5
KeyWords: Spectroscopy; Radiofrequency
Abstract: This volume is a scientific tribute to Adriano Gozzini (1917-1994), professor at Pisa at the University from 1959 and at the Scuola Normale Superiore from 1984. This volume is published on the twentieth anniversary of this death; Adriano Gozzini was a pioneer in microwave molecular spectroscopy, optical pumping and laser spectroscopy for over thirty years and the main Italian player in the area of atomic physics. The volume includes nineteen original papers by Adriano Gozzini published in international journals or in conference proceedings with the addition of an unpublished preprint. Selected items provide a complete picture of the different topics addressed by the scientist throughout his scientific career. Each item is associated with a commentary of scientists who worked with him or international experts on the topic, including Nobel laureates C. Cohen-Tannoudji, TW Haensch and S. Haroche. The book also contains a Preface of the editors, an Introduction by Prof. Franco Bassani, Director of the Scuola Normale Superiore and close friend, a Biography by Silvia Gozzini and Francesco Maccarrone and the translation of an article In Memory of Adriano Gozzini (by Francesco Lenci) published on the journal Monitor-Sapere in December 1994
