Research Unit Pisa

Pisa Research Unit

The Pisa research unit of CNR/INO was created in 2010 with the foundation of the new INO institute. The unit includes mainly research staff coming from the Institute for Chemical Physical Processes of CNR (formerly Institute of Atomic and Molecular Physics,  IFAM) and from the unit of the National Institute of the Physics of Matter (INFM) located at the Physics Department of the University of Pisa.
The unit has been named after the late Prof. Adriano Gozzini, founder of the first CNR Laboratory in Italy devoted to Atomic and Molecular Physics (LAFAM).
The National Institute of Optics deals with optics in general, atom optics, and in particular with the applications of lasers in the fields of physics and chemistry.
The Pisa unit has about 30 staff members including researchers, technicians and administrative staff.
There are three main lines of research:
– the extremes of the study of matter and the ultra-cold atoms;
– microscopy for the the study of matter on micrometric scale:
– the use of very high power lasers for biomedical applications.

The Head of the unit is Dr. Leonida Antonio Gizzi
